Boys & Girls Club facility up for $345K makeover
The Indio clubhouse of the Boys & Girls Club of Coachella Valley is getting a $345,510 makeover. The 45-year-old clubhouse at 83-100 Date Ave, has already received a new roof and air-conditioning system. A complete renovation of the gymnasium is under way and expected to be complete in September. The Indio Community Development Block Grant Program and grants from the Indio Youth Task Force and the LA84 Foundation are helping to pay for The improvements. The club is in the middle of raising funds for the second phase of the reconstruction project, estimated to cost about $450,000. It will include a remodel of the program areas, games and art rooms, technology and education Center and bathrooms.

The Indio Task Force and Boys & Girls Club of Coachella Valley have once again partnered on a significant project at the local Indio branch. At the May meeting of the Board of Directors, a decision was made to contribute $50,000 toward the Phase One remodel project of the original clubhouse. Constructed in 1966, the facility is in need of updating and modernizing and IYTF has taken a major role in making the Club’s dream come true. Over the past few years, the Task Force has assisted financially with the construction of the Boxing Facility, the Joel Smilow Family Teen Center, and now, the latest capital project. Task Force Board members appreciate the significant role played by the Boys & Girls Club in our community and believe our investments to be in the best interest of the youth of Indio. Thousands of boys and girls have benefited from the many youth development programs offered by the club and its professional staff and volunteers over the past 45 years.

Girl Scout Troop 106 celebrates with a special year end party.

Members of Girl Scout Troop 106, the only all Down Syndrome member troop in the United States (to the best of our knowledge) celebrated another successful year with a party for troop and family members at the Indio Teen Center. The troop members, which are sponsored by IYTF, were presented with patches, pins, and other items that celebrated and recognized the troops work over the past year. This unique partnership between the City of Indio Teen Center, Girls Scouts of San Gorgonio Council, and the Task Force is making a huge difference in the young girls that participate in the program. Highlights for the year included the annual Girl Scout cookie sale, art classes at the Old Town Artisan Studio, members’ donation of turkeys at Thanksgiving to the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission, participation in events at the Teen Center, and involvement in several community events. The Task Force is proud to be a sponsor of this special group of young ladies.
